The use for mapping and surveying is one of the most useful drone functions for many communities. With drones, surveyors no longer need to walk and circle the survey area for days.

Drones make mapping or survey work more manageable and create more accurate information, data, and models. In addition, drones also offer an easy, fast, and affordable way of mapping.

A completely different types of drones for mapping is needed than a drone for standard commercial requirements. The aim of it is to produce high-quality catches and an effective mapping process.

Drone Mapping: Basic Definition

Mapping is the grouping of areas related to several geographical regions using an appropriate and correct scale. Mapping includes data acquisition stages with surveys that are then processed and manipulated to produce complete information.

Drone mapping is a practice that involves acquiring hundreds of aerial images and then ‘stitching’ them together digitally with specialized mapping software. The purpose of drone mapping is to create more extensive and more accurate composite images.

In general, drone mapping aims to measure the state of the area/region/area for part of the information gathering process.

The data and information collected from drone mapping are then used by a team of experts or stakeholders, such as civil engineers, agricultural experts, forestry experts, or architects.

Three types of drones for mapping are commonly found in the market, namely:

1. Fixed Wing Drone

Fixed Wing Drone is a drone with a fixed-wing model. Because the wings are fixed like an airplane, this drone cannot stay still at one point. Fixed-wing drones have to keep moving.

For this reason, this type of drone is quite tricky for mapping activities. So, the RPAS VTOL (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, Vertical Take-Off, and Landing) drone was developed. This drone model has capabilities like a multi-rotor drone.

2. Single Rotor Drone

If the fixed-wing drone is like an airplane, the single rotor drone is like a helicopter. Even for flying, single-rotor drones glide like helicopters. It takes special training for pilots to be able to fly a single-rotor-type drone.

Generally, the main advantage of single-rotor drones is lifting heavy loads. In addition, single-rotor drones are also faster than multi-rotor drones.

For mapping needs, this type of drone can last a very long time at one point. So it is perfect for taking a large number of shots from the same point.

3. Multi-Rotor Drone

Multi-rotor drones are commonly recognized drones by commercial standards. For mapping needs, usually, the drone used is a quadcopter or hexacopter.

Multi-rotor drones require a lot of energy to keep them in the air. Therefore, multi-rotor-type drones are less efficient for mapping needs.

Multi-rotor drones are commonly used to record aerial views. Multi-rotor drones will find it difficult to handle mapping needs that take more than 30 minutes.

In short, the primary purpose of drones for mapping is to give the big picture in a short time. To achieve this, it takes a variety of types of drones for mapping according to their needs. Therefore, it is essential to coordinate, develop systems, and integrate multi-disciplinary activities to identify drone needs and achieve the desired target.
